Pip's first day at nursery — scene 1

Bramble’s Little Lessons · Scene 1 of 5

Pip's first day at nursery

Morning light slipped into the burrow. Today is Pip’s first day at nursery, and Pip’s tummy felt wobbly.

Pip: “I don’t know anyone there. What if I want to come home?”

Bramble padded in and said softly,

Bramble: “You might feel wobbly for a while. That’s allowed. And a grown-up always comes back at the end.”

Pip woke up early. Today is Pip’s first day at nursery.

Pip: “Will I stay there all day?”

Bramble came to the door and said softly, “Just for the morning. And a grown-up always comes back.”

Pip and Bramble walked along the mossy path.

Hazel: “Hello Pip! There are blocks at nursery, and paint.”

Pip: “Blocks and paint. Okay.”

Old Oakley the owl waited on a low branch.

Old Oakley: “You hang up your coat, then you play. If nursery feels too big, hold on to one thing you like.”

Pip: “One thing I like?”

Old Oakley: “Yes, little one. The blocks can be that thing.”

Inside the big hollow tree it was warm and busy. Bramble waved goodbye from the door.

Pip: “Bye, Bramble.”

Pip sat by the blocks. A little rabbit sat down too, and the tower grew tall.

Then Bramble came back, just as promised.

Pip: “I made a tower!”

Pip walked home with a painting and a sleepy smile.
