Pip tries something new — scene 1

Bramble’s Little Lessons · Scene 1 of 5

Pip tries something new

There was something new in the bowl that morning: small orange berries, shiny as beads, and nobody in the burrow had eaten one before.

Pip: “I don’t like those. I haven’t had one, but I know.”

Bramble padded in and said softly,

Bramble: “Then don’t eat one. Honestly. Nobody in this burrow is going to make you.”

There was something new in the bowl this morning. Little orange berries.

Pip: “I don’t like those.”

Bramble said softly, “That’s alright. Nobody has to eat a single one.”

Pip and Bramble walked along the mossy path.

Hazel: “Hello Pip! You can try a tiny bit on a little spoon.”

Pip: “A tiny bit?”

Old Oakley the owl waited on a low branch.

Old Oakley: “You can have a tiny taste, or you can say, “not this time.” Both are fine.”

Pip: “Not this time?”

Old Oakley: “Yes, little one. Nobody will make you.”

At the table, Pip looked at the little orange berry for a long moment.

Pip: “I’ll try a tiny bit.”

Pip took the smallest taste. It was a bit sweet and a bit strange.

Pip had bread and soup too, and that was plenty.

Pip: “I tried it!”

Pip walked home in the golden light with a sleepy smile.
