Pip learns to share — scene 1

Bramble’s Little Lessons · Scene 1 of 5

Pip learns to share

Pip has a little wooden boat with a red sail. It is Pip’s favourite thing in the whole burrow.

Pip: “If I take the boat to the stream, someone will want it.”

Bramble padded in and said softly,

Bramble: “Maybe. Wanting a turn isn’t the same as taking it away. The boat stays yours.”

Pip has a little wooden boat. Pip loves it best of all.

Pip: “It’s mine.”

Bramble said softly, “It is yours. Nobody will take it away.”

Pip and Bramble walked down to the stream.

Hazel: “Hello Pip! We can take turns. First one, then the other.”

Pip: “Turns?”

Old Oakley the owl waited on a low branch.

Old Oakley: “Turns means the boat comes back to you. You can say, “my turn next.”

Pip: “My turn next.”

Old Oakley: “That’s it, little one. And you do not have to share today if you don’t want to.”

A small otter looked at the boat. Pip held it tight, then thought for a moment.

Pip: “You can sail it. My turn next.”

The boat went bobbing along, and it came back, just like Old Oakley said.

Pip and the otter sailed the boat until the sun went orange.

Pip: “That was fun.”

Pip walked home with the little boat and a sleepy smile.
